Many homeowners struggle to find a balance between home maintenance and the health of their families. If you have children with asthma, family members who are sensitive to smells, or you simply want to lead a more Eco-friendly life, using vinegar to clean your home could be just what you need. White distilled vinegar is available at any grocery store and can be used in a variety of ways. Whether you've never used vinegar before or you're looking for new ways to use it around the house, it's possible to replace your regular cleaning sprays for ordinary vinegar and start living a healthier, happier life.

1. Clean your counters
If your family tends to leave messy crumbs, spills, or stains on your counters, it's time to grab your vinegar. Even tough stains don't stand a chance against the strength of vinegar. Mix equal amounts of vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on your counters and wipe dry with a washcloth. This will quickly remove any sticky spots and will leave your counters looking shiny and new.

2. Mop your floors
Many commercial floor cleaners are pricey and contain harsh chemicals, but vinegar offers a simple way to make your floors look brand new. Mix a half cup of vinegar with a gallon of warm water and mop your floors as usual. When you're finished, simply use a towel to dry your floors. One of the biggest perks of using vinegar is that unlike many harsh cleaners, the smell is not hazardous to the lungs of children or pets.

3. Remove odors
If you've been struggling to get a particular odor out of your home, pour some vinegar into a bowl. Place the bowl in the room with the offending smell and let it sit overnight. You'll find that the vinegar absorbs the odor and leaves your home smelling fresh. You can also do this in cupboards or in your refrigerator when you notice that things are getting a bit stinky.

4. Scrub your toilets
Many families worry that bleach and other harsh chemicals can be dangerous. Fortunately, vinegar offers a safe way to clean toilets. Just pour a cup of vinegar into the toilet and let it sit for half an hour. Return with your scrub brush to clean the sides of the toilet.

5. Clean your pets
All dogs love to run and have fun outside, but playing in the mud has consequences. Clean your dog and leave him smelling and looking great with ordinary white vinegar. Mix a cup of vinegar with two gallons of water. Pour the mixture over your dog before you dry him with a plain towel. There's no need to rinse the vinegar off of your dog. He'll look and smell fantastic.
