Quick ways to promote your book

People lining up for a book signingCongratulations! You've published your book. This in itself is quite an accomplishment. In fact, it's one you probably worked toward for years. Now that your book is on store shelves, however, your real work is just beginning. Many authors don't realize just how important marketing a book is, nor do they understand just how much work goes into promoting a book once it has been published. If you're a new writer, creating a buzz about your book is an essential part of increasing your sales and getting your story noticed by the public. While many publishers will create a marketing plan to help your book along, much of the work will be on you.

Tell everyone
First off, tell everyone you know that you've published a book. Don't brag about it or be obnoxious, but let people know. Even if someone isn't interested in your story, chances are they know someone who is interested. If people know about your book, they'll share it with other people. For example, let's say you wrote a book about fishing. Tell your cousin about it. Even if he doesn't like fishing, he may have friends who do and he can recommend your book to them.

Book signing
Another way you can create a buzz about your book is to hold a local author book signing. This can be as simple as visiting your local bookstore and asking to set up a table and sell your books. Many bookstores will be happy to let you do this. If you choose to hold a book signing, make sure you look professional. Dress up a little, maybe you don't need the fully formal attire approach in this day and age, but looking the part is very important. It's also important to remember to smile. You may be there for a few hours and you may start to feel tired, but first impressions are everything. If someone thinks you look frustrated or grumpy, they will be less likely to buy your book.

Bloggers
Blog coverage is another way many authors choose to promote their books. You can do this by giving bloggers review copies of your book and asking them to write about their experience reading it. Another way you can create an online buzz about your book is to have bloggers give away free copies of your book to their readers. You'll get people thinking about your books and you'll also get your books into the hands of people who will talk about them.

Social media
Finally, create a social media presence so you can interact and speak with your fans. This will also enable you to keep your readers updated on new books you're working on. If you aren't already active on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest, now is the time to start. Create fan pages and make sure you fill them with real and interesting content. For example, you can post about your books on Facebook, but you can also discuss news articles and book-related blogs you come across. This will keep your readers interested in your pages and will keep them coming back for more.
